Inter-cities team chess match up... It all started as a concept. Two chess teams from different cites, competing to see which city is the best. An idea which was discussed in a chess group chat, without any assurance if such thing is possible. But, with great minds tuned in into one goal, the 1st Inter-Cities Chess Club Team Match up between the Shenzhen 8 Pawns and Guangzhou Knight Watch, was finally held on September 25, 2016 , 2:00 PM at the Flora Cafe in Guangzhou. It was a competition consisting of 10 members representing each team, featuring the best players of their club.
It was the 1st of its kind, since most chess players are coming from different countries. People with different cultures , hence sharing one passion, and that is playing the game of chess. As the playing field started to fill in, both teams did not know what to expect. How strong are the opponents, what chess openings to use? How will somebody accepts the taste of defeat and who will take the blame if someone losses the game? After all, team chess competition is a harder pill to swallow. Since you need to think not only your game, but also the result of your team mates.
Games started, suddenly all were on a different mind set. Each became combatants, tacticians and defenders of their kingdom. Focussed on trying to attack, defend and exploit enemies weakness. It was a war only our minds could see. It was gruelling, agonising and painful. Thus, in the midst of each battle, somebody has to be victorious. When the smoke was cleared, the Shenzhen 8 Pawns won. But it was not an easy task to pursue.
At the end of the day, the results did not really matter. We felt fulfilled, because we were able to achieve our goal and accomplished our purpose. To build a bridge that will serve as a bond between two cities. Its not all about winning, but to reach new grounds. To gain new friends, to meet fellow wood pushers to whom we can share our thoughts and ideas on and off the board. This event is just the beginning.
